Hardy Legacy 1922 is a vintage cognac now available at Collection '86, and it belongs to the second category. Drawn from the private collection of Jacques Hardy himself, this cognac was distilled over a century ago, preserved in glass demijohns for decades, and eventually decanted into a Lalique crystal vessel as part of the most exclusive release Maison Hardy has ever produced. Only 10 Legacy sets were made. No two are the same. And the 1922 vintage was one of just five eaux de vie selected from the rarest reserves the Hardy family had to offer.

The House: An Englishman's Obsession With France

Hardy Cognac begins with a man who couldn't stay away. Anthony Hardy was a London wine and spirits merchant who spent years traveling to the Charente region on business before relocating permanently in 1863. He adopted the French form of his name, Antoine, chose the rooster as his house emblem, and set about building one of the most respected maisons in cognac.

By 1869 the house had earned the Diplome d'Excellence. By 1880 it had a global distribution network reaching Czarist Russia. It survived the phylloxera crisis that devastated French vineyards in the 1870s, two World Wars, and five generations of family leadership. Antoine's grandson Armand guided the house from 1924 until his death in 1957, when Jacques Hardy took over as Managing Director and expanded the brand into the Americas, Africa, and eventually into what the house calls the "Haute Couture" of cognac: collaborations with Lalique and Daum crystal that transformed how the world's finest spirits were presented.

Today the house is led by Benedicte Hardy, the fifth generation. But it is Jacques' personal collection that makes the Legacy series possible.

Jacques Hardy's Private Reserves

Between 1939 and 1957, Jacques quietly acquired a series of exceptional eaux de vie in demijohns from private sources across the Cognac region. These were not commercial stocks. They were personal acquisitions, spirits that caught his attention for their character or provenance, set aside as he rose to lead the family business.

From this reserve, five vintages were chosen for the Legacy series: 1802, 1812, 1820, 1906, and 1922. The three oldest predate the phylloxera epidemic, produced from Folle Blanche and Colombard grapes that were largely wiped out and replaced with Ugni Blanc afterward. The 1906 and 1922 represent the post phylloxera era, when the industry rebuilt itself from near destruction. The 1922 comes from a France still recovering from the First World War, a spirit of resilience distilled in a landscape that was still healing.

The Legacy Set: 10 Made, No Two Alike

Conceived in September 2016, the Hardy Legacy collection was produced exclusively for VIP clients. Only 10 sets were made, each containing three of the five available vintages in a unique combination. Every vintage is presented in an individual Lalique crystal decanter, housed in a handcrafted wooden box made by artisans in the Cognac region, and personally signed by Benedicte Hardy.

Bottled at 40% ABV with a certificate of authenticity, these were not made for retail. They were created as heirlooms. At Bonhams, individual Legacy decanters from the oldest vintages have carried estimates of £12,000 to £18,000. The 1922, while younger than the pre phylloxera expressions, carries its own significance as one of the five pillars of a collection that will never be replicated.

What To Expect In The Glass

Across Hardy's range, tasters describe aromatic profiles built on dried apricot, honey, vanilla, and candied orange peel, with older expressions revealing deeper layers of leather, tobacco leaf, toasted almond, and subtle spice. On the palate, the house signature is a velvety smoothness with flavors that unfold in harmonious layers and a long, warm finish.

The 1922 vintage would have spent decades maturing in oak before being transferred to demijohns, which effectively freeze the spirit by halting interaction between liquid and wood. What you taste is a snapshot of the cognac at the moment Jacques Hardy decided it had reached its peak. Sukhinder Singh, co founder of The Whisky Exchange and one of the foremost cognac collectors in the world, has described Hardy's oldest vintages as remarkably fresh and full of life, with a lingering rancio character that defines truly exceptional aged cognac.

Collection '86 features the Hardy Legacy 1922 Cognac because it represents a convergence that cannot be manufactured or repeated. A century old eau de vie from a pivotal era in French history.
