The Bottle
Karuizawa stopped distilling on December 31, 2000, and its buildings at the foot of Mount Asama were torn down in 2016. No more will ever be made. Once in a Lifetime brings together whisky from the 1960s through the final distillation in 2000, assembled by Number One Drinks Company into a single vatting meant to tell the distillery's whole story rather than one chapter of it.
The name is inspired by the Japanese idea that every moment can happen only once, which applies to the distillery, to the casks, and to this vatting, which can never be assembled again. Released in November 2025 to mark seventy years since Karuizawa's founding, it is bottled at 58.4 percent and limited to 145 bottles worldwide, each with a hand-printed karakami label from Kyoto's Karacho. Collection 86 pours it by the ounce at Yaamava' Resort & Casino in Highland, California.
