The Bottle
Made by Egon Müller III from the Scharzhofberg, a steep, south-facing slope of slate above Wiltingen whose records reach back to 1037. Before the warmer vintages that began in 1988, the cool Saar valley reached Spätlese ripeness perhaps two or three times a decade, which makes a 1964 Spätlese a record of one of the few years that allowed one. It was fermented with native yeasts and raised in old thousand-litre oak fuders, from vines that include ungrafted plantings from 1880 and 1890.
At a tasting in Beaune, a guest asked Egon Müller whether it was surprising that an old riesling could still be so fresh. His answer: but this is not an old riesling. Tasting notes below are from John Gilman of View From the Cellar, who scored the wine 94 points. Collection 86 offers it by the bottle at Yaamava' Resort & Casino in Highland, California.
