Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco 1986

Marqués de Murrieta • 21 Years in Oak

The Bottle

Harvested in October 1986 from Capellanía, a vineyard planted in 1945 on Marqués de Murrieta's Finca Ygay estate, this white Rioja spent 252 months in American oak barrels and another 67 months in concrete before it was bottled on January 29, 2014. No other winery in the world ages a wine in barrel for that long. A pH of 2.98, closer to Champagne than to most still whites, is what carried it through.

The blend is 97 percent Viura and 3 percent Malvasía, and only 8,125 bottles were made. Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate awarded it 100 points in 2016, reported as the publication's first perfect score for a Spanish white wine. Collection 86 offers it by the bottle at Yaamava' Resort & Casino in Highland, California.
